HRD Programme on ‘From Soil to Success: Smart Agri-Horticultural Practices for Enhancing Farm Income Role of KVKs’ Organised at ICAR-ATARI, Kolkata

10–12 March 2026, Kolkata

A three-day Human Resource Development (HRD) Programme on “From Soil to Success: Smart Agri-Horticultural Practices for Enhancing Farm Income Role of KVKs” was successfully organised from 10–12 March 2026 in Kolkata. The programme was conducted by the Directorate of Research, Extension & Farms (DREF), West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences (WBUAFS), in collaboration with ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institutes, Kolkata. It was attended by Heads, Subject Matter Specialists (SMS), Farm Managers, and Lab Technicians from five Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) across West Bengal.

In his inaugural address, Dr T.K. Datta, Vice Chancellor, WBUAFS, emphasised the critical importance of maintaining soil health for sustainable agricultural development. He highlighted that the integration of modern technologies, improved farm management practices, and skilled human resources can significantly enhance the income and livelihood security of small and marginal farmers.

Dr Pradip Dey, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Kolkata, underscored the importance of balanced nutrient management, conservation of soil organic matter, and adoption of sustainable farming practices to maintain soil fertility and long-term productivity. He stated that healthy soils form the foundation of resilient farming systems, supporting environmental sustainability, climate adaptability, and food and nutritional security. He also highlighted the pivotal role of Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) and extension networks in disseminating scientific soil management practices, contributing to sustainable agriculture and the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.

Dr Keshab Chandra Dhara, Deputy Director (Farms), coordinated the programme and highlighted the importance of collaborative platforms that bring together researchers, extension professionals, and field practitioners to promote sustainable soil health management.

The technical sessions covered key themes including soil health management for future generations, the Soil Health Card Programme and advanced soil testing techniques, reclamation of problematic soils in the Gangetic alluvial zone, and value addition and entrepreneurship in floriculture. An interactive workshop on sustainable soil management further enriched the learning experience.

A total of 22 participants attended the programme and actively engaged in the sessions. The training served as a valuable platform for knowledge exchange and capacity building among extension professionals and is expected to contribute significantly to the promotion of sustainable soil management practices and enhanced agricultural productivity in Eastern India.
