ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, Goa organized a field day and ranching of Indigenous Fish Stocks in Valvanti River at Keri, Sattari, Goa on the occasion of International Day of Action for Rivers to highlight the significance of the conservation of Small indigenous fishes and their habitats, for the sustainable future of riverine ecosystems today. Rivers are vital life-support systems, sustaining diverse aquatic habitats for species survival. However, urbanization, ornamental trade, overfishing, and pollution have led to a significant decline in indigenous fish stocks, especially in the Western Ghats region.
Dr. Shamila Monteiro, Director, Fisheries and Member Secretary, Goa State Pollution Control Board, stressed the importance of river conservation for sustaining fish diversity in the Western Ghats region.
The event included a small aqua-quiz competition for students, the distribution of fish bowls to winners, and the dissemination of extension folders and fish posters to raise awareness about Goa's fish diversity among the local people.
