ICAR-CIFRI Celebrates 77th Foundation Day

Fish, Fishers and ICAR-CIFRI: 77 Years Of Service To The Nation

The 77th Foundation Day of the Institute was commemorated today, at the headquarters of ICAR- Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore. This humble beginning was followed by several epoch-making technologies, including Composite Fish Culture, Reservoir Fisheries Management Guidelines, Conservation of Hilsa and Other Riverine Fish Species, Enclosure Culture, River Ranching programmes and development and commercialization of different products.

On this occasion as Chief guest Shri Avanindra Singh, IAS, Secretary to West Bengal government, Department of Fisheries, in his address as chief guest congratulated all the officers and staff members of ICAR-CIFRI on 77th foundation day. He informed on the upcoming West Bengal inland fisheries policy and stressed on various programmes run by West Bengal government for the development of fisheries in the state.

Dr. Dhriti Banerjee, Director, Zoological Survey of India, Kolkata, congratulated on the 77th foundation day and lauded ICAR-CIFRI for its support of the growth of fisheries sector in the country over decades. She urged the conservation of fisheries biodiversity in a war footing manner.

Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI in his welcome address informed about the accomplishments and achievements made by the institute over the course of the last 76 fruitful years on various aspects of enhancing fisheries in inland open waters, including conservation measures executed for reviving or conserving riverine fish species, and technologies adopted by fishers communities throughout India.

Dr. D. B. Shakyawar, Director, ICAR-NINFET, Kolkata, and Dr. Gouranga Kar, Director, ICAR-CRIJAF, Barrackpore, also addressed on this occasion.

Several publications, including Nilanjali (Hindi Magazine), CIFRI Masik samachar, and book entitled Mapping of water bodies of Telangana state was released on this occasion.

A farmer-scientist interaction was organized with the attendance of 150 farmers and entrepreneurs. Progressive fish farmers shared their knowledge with the other participants. The ir queries were answered by the scientists.

An institutional tour was also conducted, in order to provide local school kids, the chance to learn about various CIFRI technologies, including those based on IOT, and to help them develop their future career goals.
