Under the ICAR-WorldFish collaborative programme, ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute adopted the tribal fisher community of Rishia Reservoir, Odisha, focusing on poverty eradication, food security, and gender equality in alignment with SDGs 1, 2, and 5.
Dr B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, emphasized the benefits of pen culture and ornamental fish farming for increasing production and improving family income, especially through women’s empowerment via self-help groups (SHGs).
A new plan for a fish landing center with a community washroom was also proposed to promote cleanliness. A Fishers-Scientists Interaction organised at Rishia Dam involved over 70 local fishers, discussing the economic challenges and strategies for community upliftment.
ICAR-CIFRI's previous interventions, including the introduction of HDPE-Pen culture systems and fishing equipment like gill nets and FRP boats, have significantly boosted productivity and sustainable livelihoods, addressing key goals of poverty, hunger, and gender equality. This initiative showcases a holistic approach to empowering tribal communities economically and socially.
