ICAR-CIFT Kochi conducts training on Seafood Decomposition partnering USFDA and JIFSAN, USA

ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, in collaboration with the Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, USA and the Food and Drug Administration, USA is conducting two consecutive training programs on "Seafood Decomposition" in two batches at the CIFT campus from January 29th - 30th and February 1st- 2nd, 2024 for elevating the quality of seafood exports from India to the required USFDA standards.

Dr. George Ninan, Director, ICAR- Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, emphasised the importance of sensory analysis of seafood decomposition as the most reliable and easiest method to characterize and analyse seafood products by trained experts.

Dr. Sarah McMullen, Country Director, India Office, USFDA, highlighted the global significance of such training programs in addressing the complexities and challenges faced by the seafood industry. She stressed the essential role of global cooperation to elevate seafood quality to meet the common standards set by the USFDA.

The comprehensive training programs, sponsored by JIFSAN, USA aims to equip regulatory and seafood industry professionals with crucial insights into sensory analysis which is a pivotal tool for ensuring the quality and safety of seafood. The primary focus of the course is on detecting and preventing seafood adulteration resulting from decomposition, with the ultimate goal of safeguarding consumers from potential health risks.

The training programme marks a significant milestone for ICAR- CIFT as it is the first-ever seafood decomposition training conducted in India in collaboration with USFDA and JIFSAN, reaffirming India's commitment to global seafood quality standards and also to boost exports. 11 experts representing USFDA and JISFAN is imparting the training on these sessions.

About 50 officials from both government and private sectors are participating in this training programme.
