ICAR-IARI, Assam Celebrates 9th Foundation Day with Vision for Agricultural Transformation in Northeast

ICAR–Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Assam celebrated its 9th Foundation Day with great enthusiasm and reverence, marking nearly a decade of impactful contributions to agricultural research, education, and rural development in the Northeast region.

The event was graced by dignitaries, scientists, farmers, and students, who reflected on the institute’s rapid strides in infrastructure, academic excellence, capacity building, and outreach.

The Chief Guest, Dr. Ranoj Pegu, Minister of Education, Government of Assam, delivered the keynote address, commending the institute’s transformative role in a remote region and emphasizing its potential to usher in a second Green Revolution. He reiterated the state government's full support toward the institute's initiatives for sustainable agricultural development.

The Guest of Honour, Shri Rahul Suresh Javir, District Commissioner, Dhemaji, highlighted ICAR-IARI Assam’s potential to uplift farmers’ livelihoods through cluster-based approaches, particularly in Dhemaji district.

Shri Tapan Kr. Gohain, Registrar, Assam Agricultural University, spoke about the institute’s achievements and emphasized opportunities for academic and research collaborations to strengthen the region’s agricultural landscape.

Dr Ch. Srinivasa Rao, Director and Vice-Chancellor, ICAR-IARI, outlined the institute’s mission to drive the second Green Revolution in the NEH region. He stressed the importance of integrated research, education, extension, training, and public-private partnerships to empower agri-stakeholders, startups, FPOs, and ensure environmental sustainability.

A key highlight of the celebration was the signing of two Memoranda of Understanding one with Assam Agricultural University and another with the Office of the District Commissioner, Dhemaji reflecting ICAR-IARI Assam’s commitment to collaborative development.

The occasion also saw the release of institute publications and presentation of awards recognizing outstanding contributions by scientists, staff, farmers, students, and media personnel.

The Foundation Day marked a significant milestone in IARI Assam’s journey toward transforming the agricultural landscape of Assam and the broader Northeast region.
