ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-IARI), Assam, coordinated an interstate exposure tour for farmers in collaboration with the College of Agriculture, Central Agricultural University (CAU), Pasighat, Arunachal Pradesh. The tour was conducted under the leadership of Dr Ch. Srinivasa Rao, Director, ICAR-IARI. The main objective of the program was to inspire farmers to generate sustainable income through value addition.
During the exposure visit, the farmers toured the ICAR-IARI Assam campus, including its laboratories and research farms. They were encouraged to explore ways to increase their income by adding value to agricultural and horticultural produce. Additionally, the farmers received valuable guidance on improving the quality of pig feed to enhance the health and weight of the pigs they are rearing.
The farm visits also offered in-depth insights into various crops, with a particular focus on pulse crops. The farmers were provided detailed advice on the cultivation and management practices of lentils suited to the region. Exposure was also provided on flower and horticultural crops to broaden their agricultural knowledge.
A total of 13 female tribal farmers, along with two female guides from CAU, participated in the program, which aimed to equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary for improving their farming practices and boosting their incomes.
The programme was coordinated by Dr Arpan Bhowmik, Dr Bornalee Handique, Dr Bhagirath Das, Dr Abhijit K. P. and, Dr Sumalatha Reddy.
