The National Farmers Day also known as Kisan Diwas is celebrated on 23rd December every year to mark the Birth Anniversary of the 5th Prime Minister of India, Shri Choudhary Charan Singh.
The occasion marks the display of a wide array of various programs, debates, seminars, competitions, discussions, workshops, exhibitions, etc., on the farmers’ unparalleled contributions to the growth and progress of the country’s economy.
ICAR- Directorate of Cashew Research, Puttur
On the occasion of Kisan Diwas celebrations, farmers were invited to the Directorate for the farmer-scientist interface.
Dr. J. Dinakara Adiga, Director, ICAR-DCR, Puttur, briefed about ICAR-DCR’s achievements in cashew and also briefed about the various schemes available for cashew cultivation.

Two progressive farmers, Shri Kadamajalu Subhash Rai and Shri Uday Kumar M shared their experiences with the other farmers.
Vegetable seed kits were distributed to the farmers under the TSP and SCSP program of the Directorate.
A demonstration was also organised in the Kemminje farm on “Weeding in cashew orchard by using brush cutter”. This was followed by a field exposure visit for the farmers to the field of Shri Kadamajalu Subhash Rai to create awareness and motivate the farmers to take up scientific cashew cultivation.
A total of 75 farmers from Bettampady, Kuriya and Kemminje villages of Puttur, Karnataka, and Karadka block of Kasaragod, Kerala attended the program.
ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture
Kakdwip Research Centre (KRC) of ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIBA) observed Kisan Diwas at the recently inaugurated fish waste processing facility at KRC Campus.
About 80 farmers, including members of the self-help group, students, scientists, and staff of KRC of CIBA participated in the program.

An awareness event on converting fish waste to wealth and sharing of experience by the firm that adopted CIBA waste-to-wealth technology: PlanktonPlus were organized.
Dr. T.K.Ghoshal, Principal Scientist, KRC of CIBA emphasized on the importance of cleanliness for the development of the nation. He also highlighted the importance of recycling of fish and domestic waste to avoid infections and diseases.
Mr. Biswajit Samanta, from M/s. TK enterprises to whom the Planktonplus technology was transferred, shared their experience on the production and performance of Planktonplus in shrimp and fish culture and also their marketing potential. He said that the farmers who are using PlanktonPlus are satisfied with the product and are of the opinion that the use of the product reduces the cost of production by reducing the feed input.
CIBA scientists demonstrated the protocol for recycling of fish wastes to value-added products and their usage in commercial aquaculture and agriculture. The valued added products, Planktonplus and HoriPlus were distributed to self-help group members.
ICAR-Central Research Institute for Jute and Allied Fibres, Barrackpore
The ICAR-CRIJAF organized Kisan Diwas and an awareness campaign to enhance the use of natural fibre for replacing plastic for clean and green India with the major objective to extend the advanced scientific cultivation technology of jute and other natural fibre crops to the farmers to harness higher economic and environmental benefits from these crops.
The Chief Guest, Shri Saurav Barik, SDO, Barrackpore expressed major concern on multiple problems posed by the plastics and urged the farmers to grow jute in a big way to re-establish the crop as the “golden fibre”. Shri Barik reiterated that after adopting improved farming technology, farmers’ productivity and income will be enhanced and urged the farming community to benefit from improved, scientific technology for productivity and income enhancement.

Dr. Gouranga Kar, Director, ICAR-CRIJAF in his address said that realising the consequences of plastic pollution and ban on ‘single use of plastics’ the country has created nationwide awareness to go for alternative to plastics. Jute of which India is the world's largest producer is the best alternative to plastics, he added. Dr. Kar urged the farmers to grab the opportunity of growing jute in the traditional cropping system following the technologies developed by the institute to make jute farming more profitable. He said that during the recent years, there was steep rise in export and domestic demand of jute-based goods. Dr. Kar emphasised that besides producing biodegradable fibre, jute plants are a huge source of renewable bio-mass and Jute crop sheds green leaves which helps in maintenance of soil fertility.
The farmers visited the fibre museum, exhibition hall, in-situ jute retting pond based integrated framing models, composting units and improved farm machineries for jute cultivation developed by ICAR-CRIJAF.
In the farmers-scientist interaction programmes was also organised on the occasion.
New improved seeds, bio control agents, botanical pesticides and small farm tools were distributed among the farmers for sustainable jute farming.
More than 200 farmers, scientists, members of SHGs and FPOs were present in this Kisan Diwas.
ICAR-National Academy of Agricultural Research Management, Hyderabad
The ICAR-NAARM celebrated Rashtriya Kisan Diwas (National Farmers’ Day) by organizing an interactive meeting with farmers at Agraharam Potlapally Village, Rajapur Mandal, Mahabubnagar District of Telangana State.

During the interaction, Dr. Bharat S Sontakki, Principal Scientist and Head, and Dr. P. Venkatesan, Principal Scientist, Extension Systems Management Division explained the importance of Rashtriya Kisan Diwas and cultivation of medicinal Plants for augmenting farmers’ health and economic status, respectively.
Samplings of medicinal/herbal plants (Costus igneus and Ocimum tenuiflorum) were distributed among the farmer partners.
Around 100 farmers actively attended and actively participated in the programme.
ICAR-CRIDA organized Kisan Diwas at Hayatnagar Research Farm (HRF)
Scientists and technical staff of ICAR-CRIDA, KVK Ranga Reddy and about 100 farmers from Adilabad and Mancherial districts of Telangana.

Dr S S Balloli, Principal Scientist also briefed the notable contributions made by Chaudhary Charan Singh for the benefit of the farming community.
Later, the farmers visited various facilities for exposure to recent technologies/methodologies.
