ICAR Institutes celebrate “World Intellectual Property Day”

The ICAR Institutes pan India celebrated “World Intellectual Property Day today with this year’s theme “Women and IP: Accelerating Innovation and Creativity”.

World IP Day is an opportunity to highlight the importance of IP rights, such as patents, copyrights, designs, trademarks, and plant varieties for encouraging innovation and creativity among the scientific fraternity of the Council. The day also celebrated the “can do” attitude of women inventors, creators, and entrepreneurs.

Intellectual Property &Technology Management Unit, ICAR organised this event through its network of Agri-Business Incubation Centres (ABICs), and Institute Technology Management Units (ITMUs) by conducting awareness programmes to encourage innovation and creativity.

Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR) in a message said that ICAR had a well-established three-tier IP and technology management system since 2006. He also mentioned that   implementation of IPR guidelines provided proven results in the form of Plant Variety (1533), Patents (1455), Copyrights (416), Trademarks (199), and Designs (72). Dr. Pathank exhorted that the IP portfolio reached the end users by signing 3679 licensing agreements with public and private organizations, which includes the contribution of 1133 women scientists working in all 114 Institutes of ICAR.

The ICAR institutes organised sessions that were addressed by women scientists/women IP experts from different public and private organizations who shared their knowledge and experience.
World Intellectual Property Day had created an inclusive and diverse environment to embrace new ideas and perspectives to protect research output, technology, brand, and creativity, so as to address the current agricultural challenges effectively.

 

ICAR-Central Institute of Temperate Horticulture Srinagar

ICAR-CITH celebrated World Intellectual Property Day in hybrid mode.

The Chief Guest, Dr. Neeru Bhooshan, ADG (IPTM), ICAR said the uniqueness of temperate horticulture is an advantage and emphasized the protection of these varieties. She stressed public-private partnership and scientist-industrial cooperation in protecting plant varieties through PPV&FRA and patent application. She urged on having at least one patent from one technology and one project.

The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Dr. M. K.Verma, Director, ICAR-CITH

 

NEHR, Umiam – Meghalaya

The event was organized in hybrid by Zonal Technology Management Centre (ZTMC), under the Chairmanship of Dr. V. K. Mishra, Director, NEHR, Umiam.

Dr. Mishra stated that awareness amongst women from rural communities must be created to safeguard their traditional knowledge and practices. Hence, acknowledging women's research activities, safeguarding their IP rights, and providing financial benefits to them shall encourage larger participation of Women in safeguarding their inventions by way of Intellectual Property Rights, he added.

Dr. Soma Roy Chowdhury, Patent Analyst, Anjan Sen & Associates, Kolkata also delivered a talk on IP rights

 

ICAR-Central Institute for Women in Agriculture, Bhubaneswar

A National Webinar on “Women and IP: Accelerating Innovation and Creativity” was organized in virtual mode.

Dr. Mridula Devi, Director, ICAR-CIWA emphasized the importance of celebrating World IP Day, and how IP rights are encouraging innovation and creativity. She further elucidated that equal participation of women and men in the innovation eco-system and in the structures and organization is cardinal to the success of its work and mission.

Two eminent speakers; Dr. Poonam Jayant Singh, Senior Scientist, ICAR-NBFGR, Lucknow, and Dr. Arpita Sharma, Principal Scientist, ICAR-CIFE Mumbai delivered their talk on “Innovations and  Creativity in Science: Thinking out of the Box” and “Gender Perspectives on Indian Patents in Dairy and Fisheries”

More than 40 participants participated in the meeting.

 

ICAR - National Academy of Agricultural Research Management

ICAR-NAARM celebrated World Intellectual Property Day by organizing a IP awareness session entitled ‘Intellectual Property Aspects of Entrepreneurship’. The programme was jointly organized by a-IDEA and ITMU, NAARM.

Dr. Senthi Vinayagam, CEO, a-IDEA stated the importance of celebrating World IP day and presented the status of IP filings from the scientists/innovators working under the aegis of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).

Dr. K. Kareemulla, in his presidential remarks, stressed the importance of innovations in growing economies like India and highlighted the importance of IP filings in boosting innovations

Dr. Monika Gupta highlighted the importance of the protection of Intellectual Property in entrepreneurial ventures and discussed various aspects related to IP protection.

The session was attended by more than 40 participants, including start-ups, faculty and other staff of the academy.

 

ICAR - Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, Goa

Dr. Parveen Kumar, Director, ICAR-CCARI, Goa chaired the session and highlighted the role of women in innovation and creativity.

The event was jointly organized by AGNI, Agri Business Incubation (ABI) Center and Institute Technology Management Unit (ITMU) of the institute.

A total of 45 participants attended the event.

 

ICAR- Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Kolkata

Dr. Pradip Dey, Director, ATARI Kolkata made a presentation on ‘Management of IP Portfolio: Know your rights’ and he highlighted different types of intellectual properties and ways to protect IPs in ICAR research ecosystem. He also stressed upon multidisciplinary team work in filing and obtaining the patent.

A special lecture on “Gender Issues in IPR: Enhancing Women's Participation in Invention and Discovery in India” was delivered by Dr. A.K. Shanker, Principal Scientist (Plant Physiology) and Officer in Charge of ITMU, CRIDA. The lecture highlighted the importance of gender equality in intellectual property rights and the importance of women's role in invention and discovery. The lecture also covered various aspects of women's role in IP, including early female inventors in India and around the world, the evolution of women's participation in IPR, statistics on patents and copyrights held by women in the past five years, and comparisons with global and regional trends.

An interaction session took place, during which scientists, technicians, and administrative staff—especially women—shared their experiences and observations on women and intellectual property rights

 

ICAR-Central Institute for Research on Cotton Technology, Mumbai

A webinar was organized on "Women and IP: Accelerating Innovation and Creativity”

Dr. S. K. Shukla, Director, ICAR-CIRCOT, Mumbai applauded World IP Day celebrations across the globe with the aim of increasing awareness and understanding of IP. He applauded this year’s theme by WIPO on the "can do" attitude of women inventors, creators and entrepreneurs around the world and their ground-breaking work.

The Guest speaker, Ms. Rohini Wayal, Senior Manager, Intellectual Property Godavari Biorefineries, Mumbai gave a presentation on the theme of WIPO 2023. She stated that women are still considered the primary caretakers of the family and are more inclined towards family responsibilities, yet they have to pursue their innovativeness to the best of their ability. She highlighted the strategies to overcome these challenges. She shared some groundbreaking inventive works by women in history till the present.

Around 150 participants attended the programme.

 

ICAR-Directorate of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Research

ICAR-Directorate of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Research (ICAR-DMAPR), Anand, Gujarat with its Medi-Hub, Technology Business Incubation (TBI) Center celebrated World Intellectual Property Day with an online sensitization workshop on Intellectual Property (IP) for Start-up Business development was held.

The Chief Guest, Dr. Manju Gerard, Principal Scientist, Intellectual Property and Technology Management (IPTM) Unit, ICAR in her address, highlighted the importance of IP management for start-up business development, economy, and livelihood. She opined that there is need for larger participation of women in the IP development.

More than, 70 participants including academia, researchers, farmers, industry representatives and startups participated in the event online.

 

ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources

Dr U K Sarkar, Director, ICAR-NBFGR released a documentary on “Power of IP in our daily lives” made by NBFGR researchers depicting emphasis of IP in research used in daily life.

An awareness talk about Intellectual property and its significance in the enhancement of small-scale entrepreneurship by rural and urban women was delivered by Dr. Poonam Jayant Singh, OIC ITMU.

An interactive brainstorming session was organized for eight groups of Women Self Help members   for their “can do” attitude.

An exhibition of eco-friendly household products handmade by women of 8 self-help women groups from Lucknow district was showcased.

About 30 products including jute bags, mud idols, products from recycled cloths, hawan samagri, phenyl etc. were displayed in the exhibition.

A studio session on creativity, innovation and IP was organized for women scientist and scholars.

 

ICAR-National Meat Research Institute, Hyderabad

Dr. S. B. Barbuddhe, Director, ICAR- NMRI provided a glimpse of the IP portfolio of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and Institute. He emphasized the opportunities to highlight IP rights, in the form of patents or trademarks, which can play a major role in encouraging innovation and creativity.

The Chief Guest, Ms. Suchitra B, an IP Attorney portrayed the role of women in IP rights across the globe. She also elaborated about patent searching, analysis, drafting as well as filing patents, trademarks, and copyrights along with handling office actions and further prosecution.

 Dr. A. R. Sen, Principal Scientist delivered a presentation on “IPR issues in the Meat and Animal Sector”.
