ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, Lucknow celebrated its 39th foundation day here today. The Bureau was established in 1983 with the vision of assessing and conserving fish genetic resources of India for intellectual property protection, sustainable utilization and posterity. The Institute through its exploration programmes across different aquatic resources of the country and discovery of new fish species is making significant contributions to the nation’s knowledge base regarding natural aquatic wealth.


The Chief Guest, Dr W.S. Lakra, Former Director and Vice Chancellor, ICAR-CIFE, Mumbai and ICAR-NBFGR inaugurated a wet lab on high value fish species at the Live Fish Germplasm Resource Centre.
Prof. A.N. Mukopadhyay, Former Vice Chancellor, Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat; Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore; Dr. Dr. A.K. Singh, Former Director, ICAR-DCFR, Bhimtal were present during the occasion.
Dr U. K. Sarkar, Director, ICAR-NBFGR highlighted the genesis, growth and achievements of the Bureau since its inception. He also mentioned that its present establishment at Lucknow was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee on 10th June, 1999.
The Foundation Day lecture on ‘Sustainable utilization and management of inland fisheries resources for food and livelihood security' was delivered by Dr B.K. Das.
A series of e-resources including a Farmers’ Corner, a Career Corner, e-book on ‘Ichthyofaunal diversity and habitat status of Luni river in Thar desert region of India’; e-Newsletter of the Institute and the Logo of Ganga aquarium – the first trade mark filed from ICAR-NBFGR were released on the occassion.
The Annual Institute Awards were presented to the staff and selected progressive farmers and the all the superannuated staff of ICAR-NBFGR were also facilitated on this occasion.
A Farm Innovators’ Day was also organised on the occasion of the Foundation Day in which 30 invited farmers participated.
Wild stock of Channa marulius from Gomti River was released in for its domestication.
On this occasion ICAR-NBFGR facility for marine ornamentals at Agatti Island, Lakshadweep was opened for visit by the students,
An essay competition was also conducted on ‘Marine biodiversity and climate change: my observations in Lakshadweep.
