ICAR-NBFGR’s conservation efforts for indigenous fish through awareness campaigns and fish distribution

ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources organized an awareness campaign on the conservation of indigenous fishes of River Krishna at Nagarjuna Sagar, Telangana today, under the Consortium Research Platform on Agrobiodiversity.

Dr. U. K. Sarkar, Director, ICAR-NBFGR, distributed Etroplus suratensis (Pearl-Spot fish) stock from the Germplasm Resource Centre being maintained at Nagarjuna Sagar reservoir to the Agency for Development of Aquaculture in Kerala (ADAK), Government of Kerala, for their Etroplus Brood Bank Development Project, Dr. Sarkar emphasised on increasing transformative efforts for the conservation of the native germplasm resources in the country.

The director and other officials from ICAR-NBFGR also had an interaction with fisheries officials to make innovative plans to conserve and replenish the fisheries resources of River Krishna, especially in the Nagarjuna Sagar reservoir.

Shri. S. Raju, Fisheries Development Officer, Telangana, lauded the efforts of NBFGR in conserving biodiversity and assured the cooperation from the state fisheries department in implementing the conservation initiatives of ICAR-NBFGR.

Around 54 fishers attended the event.
