ICAR- National Institute of Secondary Agriculture, Ranchi organized 10th Annual Review Workshop of “Network Project on Conservation of Lac Insect Genetic Resources” (NP-CLIGR) through online mode on 23rd March 2023.
Chief Guest, Dr. SN Jha, DDG (Agri. Engineering) chaired the inaugural function and expressed his views on the importance of conserving the indigenous natural resources of the nation like lac insects. He stressed that the survey for the natural lac insect population of the country should be given priority and be completed by giving momentum to the work.
Dr. KP Singh, ADG (Farm Engineering) asked all the centers to present the annual achievements in quantifiable terms as number of new lac insect / host plants collected and conserved, research articles published, patents, copyrights filed and new technologies developed.
Dr. K Narsaiah, ADG (PE) stressed upon the early publications of Field Guide of major lac host-plants’ and all the recorded lac host-plants, which would serve as a very useful resource for the stakeholders of the lac industry.
Dr. Abhijit Kar, Director ICAR-NISA welcomed all the delegates and participants stated that the project has to align with the expanded mandate of the institute for its sustainability after survey work is completed.
In his opening remarks, Dr. KK Sharma, Project Co-ordinator NP-CLIGR and former Director, NISA welcomed all the delegates and highlighted the importance of lac insect biodiversity conservation and role of lac insect farming in providing livelihood and forest conservation. He informed that all the new species of lac insects described recently have been reported from areas where lac is not cultivated commercially, hence importance of surveys and documentation.
A concluding session was held at the end in which Dr. Panna Lal Singh, PS asked to document the success stories of the project.
The meeting ended with a vote of thanks to all the participants by Dr. K Thamilarasi, Co-PI of the project.
