ICAR-NRCSS, Ajmer introduces Seed Spices in Koraput regions under Entrepreneurship Development Programme

ICAR-National Research Center on Seed Spices, Ajmer is an apex organization involved in research and development of seed spices. Institute has developed various technologies viz., production technologies, organic cultivation and post-harvest technologies in seed spice.

Koraput, Odisha which is a tribal and aspirational district has great possibilities for cultivation of seed spices due to favorable climatic conditions.

ICAR-NRCSS, took initiative to introduced these crops in Koraput region under project “Entrepreneurship development through Seed Spices based Science & technology Intervention to improve the livelihood of farmers from Koraput district in Odisha".

In the first phase of the project   feasibility for cultivation of these crops will be assessed through demonstration of 14 different varieties of eight seed spices.

In next phases, demonstration & training will be given to tribal farmers on various technologies developed by ICAR-NRCSS viz., organic cultivation, post-harvest value additions and seed production of seed spices and linked them for marketing agencies, so that entrepreneurship skill will be developed among them.

The project will be implemented in collaboration with of ICAR- ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation, Regional Station, Koraput; AICRP Spices; Odisha University of Agriculture & Technology and Odisha Rural Development and Marketing Society.

One team of ICAR-NRCSS scientists and collaborating organization visited different farmers field and selected for 80 tribal farmers for cultivation of seed spices.

A one-day training program was organised at ICAR-IISWC, Regional Station, Koraput to demonstrate the cultivation of these crops today. Quality seeds of seed spices were also distributed among the farmers.

Dr. S N Saxena, Director, ICAR-NRCSS said that this region has immense potential for production of chemical free seed spices, which will have direct export value.

The training and demonstration was organized by Scientists from ICAR-NRCSS, Ajmer along with Scientists from ICAR-IISWC, Regional Station, Koraput.
