ICAR-Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research, Karnal designed and successfully executed an innovative digital (online) seed booking system i.e. IIWBR Seed Portal (register.iiwbrseed.in) to widen the delivery window for climate resilient and biofortified varieties to the farmers. The seed portal was launched in September 2023, ensuring the timely availability of quality seeds to farmers. Farmers were asked to provide basic information, including their name, address, state, mobile number, Aadhar number, and birth date. Varieties were selected based on recommended zones and wheat-growing states. Seed booking was confirmed through a one-time password and a text message, with the entire process backed by an Aadhar number to prevent duplication.
Farmers from 13 wheat-growing states, including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Chhattisgarh, have registered for 11 wheat varieties and one barley variety. The most bookings on the seed portal were received from Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.
In total, 27876 bookings were received through the seed portal for 1863.95 q of TL seeds from 13 different states within 20 hours of the opening of the IIWBR seed portal. Farmers are booking seeds at a rate of 1393 per hour for various varieties, with an Aadhar number-based interface for confirmation. The IIWBR seed portal has seen a three-year increase in registration, indicating a growing demand for IIWBR varieties across wheat-growing states. An innovative seed distribution system ensures faster deployment.
