Advantage Vidarbha 2025: ICAR-CIFE Unveils Smart Bin Prototype and Promotes Sustainable Fish Waste Solutions

ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Mumbai, participated in the second edition of Advantage Vidarbha, held from February 7-9, 2025, at Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University Grounds, Nagpur, Maharashtra. Organized under the ‘Khasdar Audyogik Mahotsav’ by the Association for Industrial Development, the event saw over 250 exhibitors, 4000 participants, and 70,000 visitors, including investors from across the globe.
Shri Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Shri Piyush V. Goyal, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister, Maharashtra and Shri Praful Patel, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha), graced the occasion.
Shri Gadkari, along with other dignitaries, inaugurated the 'CIFE-Ergonomic Smart Bin Prototype for Shrimp and Fish Waste'. This innovative bin, developed through a collaboration between ICAR-CIFE and Bajaj Steel Industry Limited (BSIL), incorporates AI and IoT technology for real-time monitoring. Equipped with an automatic lid, waste level sensors, and gas detection modules for methane, ammonia, and carbon dioxide emissions, the bin offers advanced waste management capabilities. It also features integration with a mobile app, providing updates on waste levels, gas detection, temperature, humidity, and bin location. The design was informed by field research and discussions with stakeholders at Sassoon Docks, New Ferry Wharf, and Versova landing centers.
As part of the event, on February 8, 2025, the ICAR-CIFE team led a Swachhta Programme at Gokulpeth Fish Market, Nagpur, under the ‘Swachhta Action Plan (SAP) and Commercial Utilization of Fish Waste’ project. The initiative was supported by Dr Ravishankar C.N., Director, ICAR-CIFE, and Dr N.P. Sahu, Joint Director, ICAR-CIFE, with coordination by Dr Arpita Sharma, Head, FEES Division, and Ph.D. Scholars Shri Shubham Soni and Shri Vijendra Kumar, alongside cleaning marshals and MAFSU student volunteers.
A key session titled ‘The Future of Fisheries: Balancing Conservation and Commerce’ was organised on February 9, 2025. A training programme on ‘Development of Manure from Fish Waste-FishANUre®’, showcasing the DIY technology for stakeholders was also held during the programme.
This event also fostered valuable interactions with industry experts, showcasing advancements in fish waste management, sustainability, and technology integration.
