Annual Review Meet on Network Project on AnGR
30th – 31st January 2025, Karnal
The annual Review Meeting of ‘Network Project on Animal Genetic Resources’ (NWP-AnGR) was organised on 30-31st January 2025 at ICAR-National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources, Karnal (Haryana) to review the progress of the Network Centres for the year 2023-24.
The NWP-AnGR under the Animal Science Division of ICAR is the largest executory framework of 33 Network Centres across the 26 States/Union Territories (UT), involving ICAR institutes, State Animal Husbandry Departments, State Agriculture/Veterinary Universities, NGOs for preserving AnGR diversity in the country. These centers are involved in the characterization and documentation of indigenous AnGR in their respective states.
Dr Raghavendra Bhatta, Deputy Director General (Animal Science), ICAR, emphasized documenting the Indigenous AnGR and registering potential breeds, so that the non-descript livestock population may be reduced. NWP Centres may play a central role in this mammoth task to be completed in time time-bound manner, he added. Dr Bhatta also lauded the efforts of ICAR-NBAGR for initiating the AnGR documentation with a Mission towards Zero Non-descript AnGR in the country and creating breed awareness among stakeholders, especially during the Livestock Census 2024.
Dr G K Gaur, Assistant Director General (Animal Production & Breeding), ICAR, emphasized over registration of indigenous breeds of livestock and poultry in the country.
Dr Bhatta and Dr Gaur also visited the National Bovine Genome Centre -Indigenous Breeds (NBGC-IB), involved in the genomic selection program in dairy breeds, at the Bureau, in collaboration with NDDB.
Dr B P Mishra, Director, ICAR-NBAGR & Project Coordinator (NWP-AnGR), briefed about the characterization activities of various Network Centres.
The progress of all the centers was reviewed comprehensively by the DDG (AS) and ADG (AP&B), ICAR during the meeting. Many of the suggestions were given for improvement of the project. Under NWP-AnGR, total 53 potential populations of indigenous livestock, poultry, and dog were taken for characterization by the participating centers, among these, the documentation of 15 populations has been completed during the period.

A total of 44 participants including Principal Investigators participated in the review Meeting and presented the progress report of their respective centres /states.
