Capacity-Building Programme on ‘Sustainable Livestock and Fodder Management: A Pathway to Food Security, Climate Resilience and Rural Prosperity’

ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Phek, under ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Medziphema, organised a 6-day capacity-building programme on ‘Sustainable Livestock and Fodder Management: A Pathway to Food Security, Climate Resilience, and Rural Prosperity’ from February 17 to 22 in Zapami village, Phek district, Nagaland. The programme was sponsored by the ICAR-Indian Grassland and Fodder Research Institute (IGFRI), Jhansi, and focused on key aspects of fodder cultivation and sustainable livestock management.
Dr Sanjeev Kumar Singh, Senior Scientist and Head, ICAR-KVK Phek, underscored the importance of integrating fodder crops into farming systems to boost sustainability and livestock productivity.
Over the course of six days, a total of 26 lectures were delivered on a range of topics, including backyard poultry farming, nutritional security through improved livestock and fodder management, turkey farming, scientific pig management, value addition and marketing of milk—emphasizing dairy profitability through processing and marketing—goat farming, and feeding management etc.
A special session on medicinal and aromatic plants and awareness of PPVFRA and farmers' rights was also organised. As part of the initiative, a fodder block for Tho-tho cattle was established with the support of ICAR-Indian Grassland and Fodder Research Institute, Jhansi.
The programme also featured a farmer-scientist interaction session, offering participants a platform to discuss livestock-related challenges and explore solutions.
The event concluded on 22nd February 2025 with the distribution of certificates to the participants, marking the successful completion of the training.
