ICAR-ATARI, Kolkata Observes International Day for Biological Diversity 2025

Sasya Shyamala Krishi Vigyan Kendra (SSKVK), RKMVERI, under ICAR- Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Kolkata, celebrated the International Day for Biological Diversity 2025 in hybrid mode, with the theme "Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development." The event aimed to raise awareness and promote scientific understanding of biodiversity conservation in alignment with global sustainability goals.

Dr Pradip Dey, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Kolkata, in his keynote address, underscored the critical role of biodiversity in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He called for collective action towards nature-positive solutions and inclusive environmental stewardship. Dr. Dey also spoke about the health risks associated with biodiversity loss, including the emergence of zoonotic diseases, and emphasized the importance of ecological restoration, pollution control, and conservation efforts to build resilient communities.

Dr Swagat Ghosh, Head, SSKVK, highlighted the significance and history of the International Day for Biological Diversity.

A technical session on “Local Solutions for Global Challenges” followed, focusing on agro-ecology, seed diversity, and wildlife protection.

Conducted by SSKVK experts and staff, the session engaged 41 students and KVK personnel, linking biodiversity themes to the SDGs and empowering students with insights into their roles as future scientists and policymakers.
