In a significant step towards fostering sustainable aquaculture, the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ms Bhairav Renderers, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, today to transfer its technology for producing fish feed using Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL). The collaboration seeks to equip Indian fish farmers with the tools necessary to boost productivity while minimizing the ecological impact of their operations.
Dr Grinson George, Director, ICAR-CMFRI, stated that this technology transfer is a significant milestone in our efforts to promote sustainable practices in aquaculture.
Shri Senthil Kumar, CEO, Bhairav Renderers said that the linkage with ICAR-CMFRI will help fish farmers to get a sustainable and affordable alternative that will not only benefit their bottom line but also contribute to the overall health of our ecosystem.
As the global demand for seafood continues to grow, there is increasing pressure on the aquaculture industry to find sustainable, affordable, and nutritious alternatives to conventional fishmeal, which is often derived from wild-caught fish. Overfishing and environmental concerns surrounding the use of fishmeal have raised alarms about the long-term sustainability of traditional aquaculture feed practices. In response to these challenges, ICAR-CMFRI’s technology harnesses the power of BSFL, which is rich in protein, essential amino acids, and fats, making it an excellent source of nutrition for farmed fish.
Bhairav Renderers will begin producing insect protein feed at an industrial scale, initially targeting the Tamil Nadu market and gradually expanding its reach.
