Dr. Sanjay Kumar Nishad, Minister of Fisheries, Government of Uttar Pradesh, visited the ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBFGR), Lucknow, today. The visit reaffirmed the State’s focus on integrating advanced technologies and government schemes to boost fisheries development.

The Minister commended the institute’s contributions and identified milt cryopreservation technology as a potential game-changer for improving breeding efficiency and ensuring year-round seed availability. He called for its commercialization and broader adoption by fish farmers.
In an interactive session with scientists, Dr. Nishad emphasized the crucial role of research in strengthening the fisheries sector and assured continued government support for science-led initiatives. He highlighted fisheries as a key driver for livelihood generation and economic upliftment, particularly for rural and marginal communities.

Speaking to the media, the Minister urged fishers, fish farmers, and aquapreneurs to fully utilize the benefits of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and institutional support to foster sustainable growth.
Dr. Kajal Chakraborty, Director, ICAR-NBFGR, briefed the Minister on the institute’s ongoing work in conserving and sustainably utilizing fish genetic resources.
The visit marked a significant move toward aligning scientific innovation with policy implementation for inclusive and technology-driven growth of the fisheries sector in Uttar Pradesh.
