International Conference on Reimagining rainfed agro-ecosystem: challenges and opportunities

ICAR-Central Research Institute for Dryland Agriculture, Hyderabad in association with Indian Society of Dryland Agriculture organized the inaugural ceremony of the International conference on Reimaging Rainfed Agro-ecosystem: Challenges and Opportunities at ICAR-CRIDA, Hyderabad today.

Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR), in his address, congratulated the researchers of rainfed farming for enhancing productivity, overcoming some of the abiotic stresses, developing resilient varieties, minimizing the risks, and bringing in resilience to the rainfed farming.  He also stressed that efforts are needed to be made by the researchers in developing new crops and varieties, new agronomic practices, crop diversification, and new extension methodologies that can further enhance the productivity and resilience of rainfed farming.

Dr. S. K. Chaudhary, DDG (NRM) urged the delegates to come up with technologies, recommendations, and policy briefs that will help the farming community in overcoming the different stresses and problems being encountered in rainfed farming.

Dr Panjab Singh, Former DG(ICAR) and Secretary DARE in his address also congratulated all the rainfed researchers and workers for their contribution to rainfed farming and believed the future growth of the country will be from rainfed areas.

Dr. B. Venkateswarlu, Former VC, VNMKV, Parbhani stressed prioritizing interventions for large-scale implementation in rainfed areas.

Dr. Arvind Kumar, Former VC, RLBCAU, Jhansi appreciated the efforts of CRIDA in organizing the conference.

Dr. Rajaram Deshmukh, Former VC, MPKV, Rahuri stressed identifying the best practices and creating awareness amongst the farmers.   

Earlier, Dr. V. K. Singh, Director ICAR-CRIDA and President ISDA, briefed about the importance of rainfed agriculture to the Indian economy. He said the aim for organizing the conference is to bring the researchers, farmers, NGOs, policymakers and private sector on the same platform so thae recommendations that are useful to the farming community can be made.  

Dr. K V Rao, Principal Scientist, and Secretary ISDA delivered a welcome address.

About 500 delegates across different countries, farmers, NGO officials, and, officials of the private sector dealing with various agricultural inputs participated in the inaugural ceremony.
