Joint Initiative in Marine Fish Taxonomy: The Integrated Efforts of ICAR-NBFGR and FSI for Enhancing Expertise

A workshop on “Ichthyotaxonomy: Journey from conventional to molecular methods” jointly organised by ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBFGR) and Fishery Survey of India (FSI), was inaugurated at the FSI, Kochi, Kerala to ignite young minds to initiate research in ichthyotaxonomy today.

Dr U. K. Sarkar, Director, ICAR-NBFGR; Dr R. Jeyabaskaran; Director General, FSI; Shri. M. Habibullah, Director, CIFNET; Dr Shine Kumar, Director, NIFPHAAT; Dr Sijo P. Varghese, Zonal Director, FSI, Kochi; Dr T. T. Ajith Kumar, Head, PAGR Centre of ICAR-NBFGR, Kochi; Scientists of FSI and NBFGR participated in the inaugural function.

Dr. Jeyabaskaran emphasised the importance of fish taxonomy and the need to organise this workshop to train personnel to document our country's fishery resources.

Dr. Sarkar emphasised the importance of integrated taxonomy and its utility in cataloguing valuable marine fishery resources. He also highlighted about discovery of over half of the existing new species from the institute belonging to the peninsular marine waters.

About 45 participants from various research and academic organisations nationwide were present. Scientists from ICAR-NBFGR, FSI, ZSI, Universities and experts with immense experience in the taxonomy field are serving as resource persons.

A training manual on marine fish taxonomy was released for distribution to the participants.
