Livelihood improvement program for tribal women of Malda, West Bengal

To upscale the socio-economic conditions of tribal women, ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore adopted eight villages under Habibpur Gram Panchayet of Malda District, West Bengal in collaboration with KVK, ICAR-CISH,  Malda under Scheduled Tribe Component.

In this regard, one awareness program was organized today.

Dr. B.K Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI highlighted the role of the Institute in livelihood enhancement in different states. He briefed about the various aspects of inland fisheries and its avenue to boost the rural economy and also thrust upon the role of inland fisheries in nutritional security

ICAR-CIFRI Cagegrow fish feed, 360 kg fish seed and lime to were distributed among 120 tribal women to support their livelihood through aquaculture in their household ponds. Ornamental fish tanks were also distributed to the 30 selected tribal women beneficiaries.

150 tribal women were selected for livelihood improvement programme out of which 120 were selected for backyard pond culture intervention and 30 for ornamental farming as a livelihood option to boost their household economy and security. These women group has also formed a FPO to boost up their economy.

 The initiative was initiated last year with on-campus training programme at ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore campus. Fifty tribal women were trained to develop their skill on inland fisheries management and were motivated to initiate small-scale fish culture in their rainfed household ponds as an alternative livelihood strategy.

The programme was successfully conducted with active participation of the tribal populace.
