National Workshop on “Climate Change Implications on Agriculture, Environment and Food Security”

ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation, Research Centre, Udhagamandalam has organized a National Workshop on “Climate Change Implications on Agriculture, Environment and Food Security” during 28 - 29 September, 2022.

Dr M Madhu, Director, ICAR-IISWC, Dehradun during his presidential address briefed about the recent technological revolutions in the agriculture sector. He urged the participants to seek assistance from technological innovations, including big data, IoT, analytics and cloud computing.

The Chief Guest, Dr Prakash Chauhan, Director, NRSC-ISRO, Hyderabad discussed about the India digital ecosystem of Agriculture and emphasised the need for effective utilization of huge satellite data to achieve the digital agriculture mission.

The Special Guest, Prof. P.V. Vara Prasad, Director, Sustainable Intensification Innovation Lab, Kansas State University delivered the Keynote address entitled, “Sustainable Agricultural Intensification towards Addressing Food, Nutrition and Climate Security”. He outlined the importance of various sustainable developmental approaches under climate change scenario to ensure food and nutritional security at global level.

Prof. Jon Middendorf, Assistant Director, Sustainable Intensification Innovation Lab, Kansas State University (USA) also graced the workshop as Special Guest.

Dr SS Chandrasekaran, Professor and Director, Centre for Disaster Management, VIT, Vellore was the Guest of Honor.

A MoU was signed between ICAR-IISWC, RC, Udhgamandalam and Centre for Disaster Mitigation and Management (CDMM), VIT, Vellore to initiate the new collaborative research works in the area of disaster management in hill ecosystem.

Dr K Kannan, Head & Co Convenor, ICAR-IISWC, Research Centre, Udhagamandalam delivered welcome address.

Lead lectures on, “Spatial Technology Applications in Agriculture under Climate Change Scenario” and “Extreme Weather Events induced disasters: Landslides causes and remedies” were delivered by Dr. R. Hebbar, Scientist "SG", Dy. General Manager, RRSC-S, NRSC, Department of Space, ISRO, Bengaluru and Dr. S.S. Chandrasekaran, Professor & Director, Centre for Disaster Mitigation and Management (CDMM), VIT, Vellore respectively.

Shri P. Mahesh, Scientist, SE, ECSA-NRSC, ISRO, Hyderabad had delivered a lead talk on “Global Warming and Mitigation Strategies”. Followed by the lead lectures,

Brain storming session was also organized on the theme area of the workshop which was chaired by Dr. Rajashree V Bothale, Deputy Director, ECSA, NRSC-ISRO, Hyderabad and Co-Chaired by Mrs.Shibila Mary, Joint Director of Horticulture, The Nilgiris, Tamilnadu.  During the brainstorming session, the participants from different organizations shared their views and research experiences on climate change mitigation strategies.

The delegates of the workshop visited the research farm at ICAR-IISWC, Research Centre, Udhagamandalam.  

The workshop was attended by about fifty participants.
