The Vice-President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu visited the Visakhapatnam Regional Centre of ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh and the Visakhapatnam Research Centre of ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh today.

Shri Naidu released the Technology on Snapper (Lutjanus johnii) Seed Production and dedicated the Snapper Seeds to the nation by handing over them to two Progressive Fish Farmers. He also visited the museums of both the Institutes.

Dr. A. Gopalakrishnan, Director, ICAR-CMFRI and Dr. R. Raghu Prakash, Scientist-in-Charge, Visakhapatnam Research Centre, ICAR-CIFT apprised the Vice-President about the innovative research activities of their respective Institutes.

The Vice-President lauded the ICAR-CMFRI and ICAR-CIFT’s commendable efforts in developing the marine fisheries of the country. He also appreciated the exemplary research efforts put in and the scientific inputs emanating from these Institutes contributing to the sustainable development of marine fisheries in the country. Shri Naidu stressed that the Marine Cage Farming and availability of quality seeds round-the year of commercially important finfishes are the two path-breaking achievements of the ICAR-CMFRI that has provided the much needed impetus for mariculture development in the country. He stated that the Snapper Seed Production and subsequent Mariculture in Cages would fulfill the domestic demands of the marine finfish as the cheap and best source of animal protein.

Shri Naidu accentuated that the existing gap prevalent in the country between the demand and supply can only be bridged by marine cage farming. He applauded the ICAR-CIFT’s pivotal role in imparting training and developing human resources in the harvest and post-harvest. He also appreciated the Institute’s role in empowering the traditional fishermen. He urged the scientists for understanding the need-based research for the fishing community, fish farmers and undertaking the innovative research. The Vice-President highlighted the importance of responsible fishing and sustainable management as future research targets. Shri Naidu complimented both the Institutes for bagging the Sardar Patel Award for the Best Institutes several times.

He was accompanied by Shri Muttamsetti Srinivasa Rao, Minister for Tourism, Culture & Youth Affairs, Government of Andhra Pradesh; Shri Vinay Chand, Collector & District Magistrate, Visakhapatnam and Shri K. Muraleedharan, Institute Management Committee Member, ICAR-CMFRI.
