Soldier to Farmer, thanks to KVK

gopal-rawatGopal Singh Rawat, is not an ordinary ex-army man, he has earned a respect as progressive farmer in his village Sunla, Tharali, Uttrakhand. The transformation is largely due to Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Gwaldum working under G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar.

After retiring from army, Gopal decided to grow vegetables at his farming field at Sunla village. Initially, he started growing vegetables in his two Nali land. But, he does not have the technical knowledge. Hope was, however, on its way. Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Gwaldum organized a field trial for farmers. Gopal participated in this trial and showed interest in growing vegetables on commercial scale. Besides providing technical know-how, scientists at KVK provided him 5x 1.5x 0.5 meter polythene for polytunnel. Seeds of suitable improved varieties were also provided as a critical input.

Now, Gopal is growing vegetables in his 10 Naali farming land. All his success is reflected in his income. He is getting seven times more income than his fellow farmers who are growing cereals. He earned Rs 70,000 in last six months. Now, Gopal is satisfied. He showed a way to his villagers-think differently and earn more. His market related approach is attracting more and more farmers of the region for vegetable farming. Now, KVK is trying to provide skills and technical knowledge to other interested farmers.
