ICAR-CIBA’s Farmers Conclave and National Workshop on Sustainable Livelihood Options in Aquaculture for Doubling Aquafarmers Inc

ciba-01-2017ICAR-Central Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture, Chennai  in association with the Fisheries Technocrats Forum (FTF), Chennai conducted a Farmers Conclave cum Workshop on “Sustainable Livelihood Options in Aquaculture for Rural Population” at Nagapattinam, which is the fisheries and aquaculture hub of Tamil Nadu, on 19th August 2017.

Detailed discussions were held to chalk out a plan for optimally utilizing the brackishwater resources and to identify interventions in the aquaculture production systems to enhance the fisheries production and increase the income of the farmers in perpetuity.

Dr.K.K.Vijayan, Director, ICAR-CIBA & Member-Secretary, Coastal Aquaculture Authority (CAA), Govt. of India, in his inaugural address articulated that the large areas of brackishwater bodies available in this region need to be effectively used for cage culture of fishes for producing food, employment and income. He informed the gathering that farmers can interact with CIBA on-line through “vanamishrimpapp”, a mobile-phone based tool available free-of-cost for sound technological support and profitable practice of shrimp farming.  He expressed that CIBA can impart skill development to fisher youth under the Attracting and Retaining Youth in Agriculture (ARYA) programme.

The workshop recommended that entrepreneurship development in nursery rearing of finfishes, mud crab and shrimp need to be taken up on priority. Development of policy guidelines for open water aquaculture and development of subsidy oriented schemes by the State and Central governments were identified as policy initiatives to enhance the fisheries production and doubling the farmers’ income in this region.
