National Symposium on “Pulses for Nutritional security and Agricultural Sustainability”

ICAR-Indian Institute of Pulses Research, Kanpur in collaboration with the Indian Society of Pulses Research and Development organized a National Symposium on “Pulses for nutritional security and agricultural sustainability to commemorate the Golden Jubilee Year of Pulses Research in India at IIPR, Kanpur during December 2-4, 2017.

Padma Bhushan Prof. R.B. Singh, in his inaugural address congratulated the pulse scientists for achieving an all-time high 22.95 million tonnes production of pulses.  He expressed concern over the fluctuating pulse production in the country and added that due to being grown largely in rainfed areas, they suffer a lot due to both high and low rainfall.

Dr S. Solomon VC, CSAU&T, Kanpur, Dr M.C. Saxena, Ex ADG (ICARDA), Dr. N. P. Singh, Director, IIPR also graced the occasion. 

The publication “Five decades of Pulses Research in India” was also released on this occasion along with the “Souvenir” and “Abstract Book” of the Symposium

On this occasion, annual ISPRD awards were given away.

Around 500 delegates, including eminent scientist, educationist, students, industrialist and farmers from different parts of the country and foreign delegates participated in the symposium.

 Recommendations

  • Strengthening of national and international collaborations for harnessing gene /traits by characterizing germplasm,
  • Use of genomic tools,
  • marker aided breeding for improving pulses for nutritional quality,
  • Tolerance to biotic and abiotic stress for development of integrated strategies leading to sustained pulse production.
  • Access of farmers to quality seed and policy support.
