A 10 days Short Course on “Modern techniques in pig semen processing and AI” was conducted by ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, Old Goa from 22nd to 31st October - 2018. This training course was sponsored by the Agricultural Education Division of ICAR, New Delhi as a part of capacity building program for ICAR Scientists and the Faculty of State Agricultural and Veterinary Universities.
Dr. M.B. Chetti, Vice-Chancellor, University of Agricultural Science, Dharwad inaugurated the Course along with the august presence of Dr. E.B. Chakurkar, Director (A), ICAR-CCARI and Course Director of the programme who welcomed the Chief Guest and participants.
It is known that along with satisfying the much-needed animal protein, the pigs play a pivotal role in supporting the livelihood of poor communities. Seeing the increasing demands of pig production in the industry, it has stimulated the need for a viable technology like Artificial Insemination (A.I.) in breeding management programs.
In this backdrop, ICAR-CCARI took the lead and organized the much-needed training and capacity building programme in the concerned area. The 10 day-long programme marked the footfall of a total of 14 participants from the 11 states of the country viz., Assam, Meghalaya, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu among a total of 12 participants from State Veterinary Universities/Colleges and 2 participants from ICAR Institutes and Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) belonging to varied categories of Scientists, Assistant Professors, Associate Professors and Subject Matter Specialists having different veterinary disciplines namely Animal Reproduction, Animal Genetics, etc., to name a few.
While briefing about the programme, Dr. Gokuldas PP, Scientist and Course Coordinator emphasized on the need of faculties to learn and update their knowledge of the subject to be passed on to the next generation.

highlighted the need for adopting the pig A.I. technology on a wider scale in the country.
With Scientists Dr. Gokuldas PP & Dr. Susitha Rajkumar as Course Coordinators of the programme, the students were also provided with hands-on sessions on modern techniques in semen evaluation, processing and Artificial Insemination in pigs.
The Valedictory Function of 10 day-long programme concluded with the Certificate distribution ceremony by the Director, ICAR-CCARI, Goa on 31st October - 2018 along with the releasing ceremony of Training Manual to the participants.
The programme also witnessed the delivery of two invited guest lectures on ‘importance of modern techniques in boar semen analysis and practical applications of ultra-sonography in swine reproduction’.
Proposing the vote of thanks, Dr. Susitha Rajkumar, Scientists and Course Coordinator of the programme said that this 10 day-long programme has contributed a lot in capacity building of the academicians and researchers who participated from the different regions of the country and were trained for important aspects in pig semen processing and AI.
