BRAQCON - 2019 concludes at ICAR-CIBA, Chennai

braqcon-01-01022019.jpgThe World Brackishwater Aquaculture Conference (BRAQCON - 2019) organized by the ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture concluded here today.

In his valedictory address, Dr. Modadugu Vijay Gupta, the World Food Prize Laureate applauded the ICAR-CIBA and Society of Coastal Aquaculture and Fisheries (SCAFi) for organizing the world conference on Brackishwater Aquaculture at appropriate time.

Dr. Gupta’s major emphasis was on dependence on one single species, the pacific white shrimp, Penaeus vannamei. He also discussed about the issues and urged the organizers for identifying the right institutions for taking the matter forward to implement the various recommendations. He further accentuated that the fisheries sector with a coastal and marine resources worth 28 trillion USD is self-sufficient to contribute for the coastal communities’ livelihood.

Dr. S.D. Tripathi, former Director, Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture and Central Institute of Fisheries Education, presented the BRAQCON - 2019 recommendations. He underlined the various recommendations on major issues in brackishwater aquaculture that included species’ diversification and rearing system, fish nutrition, biotechnology, aquatic animal health, aquatic environment and climate change, ecosystem & biodiversity conservation, and socio economic issues.

Prof. Chris Hauton, University of South Hampton, UK applauded the various presentations made by the successful fish farmers and scientists. He further elaborated that the problems and issues of aquaculture are of international level and needs a prompt support by all the countries to solve it efficiently.

Dr. K.K. Vijayan, Director, ICAR-CIBA and Convener BRAQCON 2019 mentioned about the successful organization of the conference. He also acknowledged the various government and private agencies’ support for helping in organizing the event for the first time in the country and getting it adjudged to be successful. He also lauded the CIBA fraternity’s efforts for organizing such a mega event.

Earlier, Dr. Alavandi, the Organizing Secretary BRACON - 2019 welcomed the guests and the participants.
