The ICAR-National Research Centre on Pig organized two capacity building residential training programmes at its campus at Rani, Guwahati (Assam) for the Pig farm managers and the Pig Bandhus (local service providers) of the State from 10th to 12th June, 2019.
The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, Government of Assam has taken a keen interest in structuring the un-organized piggery sector to an organized level through the different activities under the National Livestock Mission (NLM) and Assam Agribusiness and Rural Transformation Project (APART). In this, the ICAR-NRC on Pig has been actively associated through these programs as a knowledge partner.
Dr. S. Rajkhowa, Director (Acting), ICAR-NRC on Pig emphasized on the importance of Artificial Insemination in Pigs for the rapid dissemination of superior germplasm for quick expansion of commercial piggery in the State.
During the programmes, the hands on training were also imparted on the scientific pig production with a special emphasis on Artificial Insemination in Pigs.
The trainees were provided with the exposure to the different aspects of AI, such as, selection of breeding boar, training of boar for semen collection, semen collection, evaluation of semen and processing of semen for AI.
The Institute is also supporting the State of Assam in developing boar semen processing laboratories in the different Districts.
The Officials from NLM and APART also marked their presence in these programmes and apprised the trainees about the activities undertaken by the respective units in popularizing Artificial Insemination in pigs in the State.
A total of 12 Pig farm managers and 14 Pig Bondhus participated in the training programme.
