Workshop on Introduction of New Sheep Breeds in SKUAST, Kashmir

The ICAR-Central Sheep and Wool Research Institute, Avikanagar, Rajasthan in collaboration with the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir organized a Meeting-cum-Workshop on “Prospects and Possibilities of Introduction of new Sheep Breeds of ICAR-North Temperate Regional Station of Central Sheep and Wool Research Institute, Garsa, Kullu, Himachal Pradesh in Kashmir Region”.

Prof. Nazeer Ahmed, Vice-Chancellor, SKUAST, Kashmir emphasized on breed characterization, evaluation and registration of unregistered breeds of Kashmir region. He also urged that besides production, the due weightage should be given to the productivity per unit/time and quality of mutton and wool by the introduction of suitable breeds and management technologies. This would help in reducing the huge amount of money that is being spent on the importation of sheep and mutton from the neighboring states - Rajasthan, Punjab and Delhi for meeting the requirements of J&K.

Earlier, the Scientists from ICAR-NTRS, CSWRI, Garsa, Kullu, Himachal Pradesh also stated about their three breeds namely - Synthetic Sheep, Avishan and Dumba (fat tail) for their production and market potential as recommended by the ICAR Regional Committee Meeting No. - 1.

During the Workshop, it was concluded that the scope of introduction of available new sheep breeds of ICAR-NTRS (CSWRI) should be tried/tested under the purview of our New Breeding Policy, 2019 for the J&K State/ Kashmir Region.

The status and scope of Sheep farming, breeds registered/unregistered and New Breeding Policy of J&K for Kashmir region with the target were also discussed on the occasion.

The Senior Officials of State Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences Departments were present on the occasion.
