Shri Surya Pratap Shahi, Minister of Agriculture, Agricultural Education and Research, Government of Uttar Pradesh inaugurated the “Short Term International Training Programme” under Indo-Africa Forum Summit - III on “Value Addition and Product Diversification in Vegetables” here today. The training programme was organized by the ICAR-Indian Institute of Vegetable Research, Varanasi 2nd to 16th August, 2019.


The Minister expressed his gratitude for the delegates from Africa. He stated that the delegates will learn our technologies and spread it in their countries. Shri Shahi also emphasized on women empowerment in agriculture and nutritional security.
Dr. Jagdish Singh, Director, ICAR-IIVR briefed about the institutional research and extension activities. Dr. Singh stated that through value-addition, from the same volume of a primary product, a high price can be realized by means of processing, packaging and upgrading the quality of the produce. He regarded the crop diversification and value-addition as the two important components of profit maximization that provide remunerative price to the farmers for their produce. Dr. Singh emphasized that the value-addition coupled with marketing has enormous potential of solving the basic problems of horticultural surplus and produce wastage. It can also help in creating the rural employment opportunities.
A total of 14 delegates were nominated from 5 different African countries.
