Awareness Programme on Conservation of Protected Elasmobranchs

cmfri-001-04092019The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute organized an Awareness Programme on “Conservation of Protected Elasmobranchs” at the Ponnani Fishing Harbour, Malappuram District, Kerala today.

The Chief Guest, Shri C.P. Muhammed Kunhi, Chairman, Ponnani Municipality inaugurated the programme. Shri Kunhi applauded the ICAR-CMFRI’s initiatives in organizing the programme at Ponnani where the fishermen unknowingly killed and sold one whale shark recently.

Shri M. Anil Kumar, Range Forest Officer, Department of Forests briefed about the Forest Department’s role to check the poaching incidences. He also stated about the different schedules of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 and the penalties imposed for violations.

The Pamphlets in Malayalam and English languages entitled “Save the Whale Shark” were released on the occasion.

The various Senior Officials of ICAR Institutes and State Fisheries Departments attended the programme.
