National Workshop on Sugarcane organized

The ICAR-Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research, Lucknow organized a one-day “National Workshop on Sugarcane: Challenges and Future Strategies for Doubling Farmers’ income” today.

The Chief Guest, Shri Sanjay R. Bhoosreddy, I.A.S., Principal Secretary, Sugar Industry and Cane Department and Cane Commissioner, Government of Uttar Pradesh urged the Scientists to develop the cost-effective and farmer centric sugarcane production technology for reducing the production cost of sugarcane and enhancing the farmers’ income.

Smt. Shubha Thakur, Joint Secretary (Crops/Oilseeds), Department of Agriculture, Cooperation & Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India accentuated on reducing the production cost of sugarcane, adopting the integrated farming system and developing the value-added products of sugarcane for doubling the farmers’ income.

Dr. R.K. Singh, ADG (CC), ICAR stressed on adopting the Brazilian pattern of producing sugar and ethanol as per its emerging demand in national and international level.

Dr. Man Singh, Director, Directorate of Sugarcane Development, Lucknow also presented Ministry’s view point in his introductory remarks.

At the outset, Dr. A.D. Pathak, Director, ICAR-IISR highlighted Institute’s efforts for doubling the sugarcane farmers’ income.

Dr. A.K. Sah, Organizing Secretary highlighted about the various problems that the sugarcane farmers/sugar industry is facing. He also highlighted the need for developing the climate-resilient sugarcane varieties and encouraging the micro-irrigation in sugarcane crop. This will lead to enhance the farmers’ income.

Sh. R.L. Tamak, Executive Director, DCM Shri Ram Limited stressed on keeping the magic variety Co 0238 red rot free, improving the yield level in various parts for making parity with the average productivity, maturity based sugarcane harvesting, etc.

More than 200 scientists, technocrats, policy makers, Government Officials, Sugar Mills Representatives and farmers participated in the Workshop.
