2 to 13 December, 2019, Udhagamandalam
The ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation, Research Centre, Udhagamandalam organized the National Level Training Programme on “Advances in Integrated Watershed Management for Rural Livelihood” from 2nd to 13th December, 2019. The programme was sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology.
The Chief Guest, Dr. S. Panneerselvam, Director, Tamil Nadu - Irrigated Agriculture Modernization and Water-Bodies Restoration and Management (TN-IAMWARM), Water Technology Centre, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore expressed his concern about the abrupt change in the climate due to human activities. He stressed on the increase in temperature by about 1.2 degrees centigrade globally that resulted in reduction in average annual rainfall from 1,250 mm to 1,050 mm. He emphasized that the reduction in rain and rainy days has increased the intensity of rain fall resulting in a loss of top fertile soil, water and nutrients. He urged to target for the proper management of the natural resources.
The Guest of Honor, Dr. O.P.S. Khola, Head, Central Soil & Water Conservation Research & Training Institute, Research Centre, Udhagamandalam accentuated that due to the presence of water only on the planet earth, it is known as Blue planet. But, only 0.7 % of the water is available for utilization that needs to be protected. He urged for the proper planning of the programme and schemes to conserve and utilize the resources effectively.
Dr. K. Kannan, Incharge Head, ICAR-IISWC, Research Centre, Udhagamandalam highlighted about the reduction in number of rainy days from 168 to 48 days at Ooty without affecting the total annual rainfall. He urged the scientists for developing the technologies as per the climate change.
