The ICAR-National Research Centre for Banana, Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu has licensed and transferred an eco-friendly technology for Banana Fibre Processing to Smt. Anita Roy, Women Entrepreneur & District Trainer, PMFME Scheme of Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh today.
Dr. S. Uma, Director, ICAR-NRC for Banana, Tiruchirapalli stated that after harvesting the fruit bunch, huge plant bio-waste is generated, out of which pseudostem (30% to 34%), flower & bracts (5%) and rhizome (12% to 14%) together contributes 50% of the Banana Plant Biomass. She underlined the disposing-off of the huge waste that creates roughly 60 Tonnes per hectare which is the biggest problem for the farmers.
Dr. P. Suresh Kumar, Principal Scientist & Inventor of the Technology briefed about the ways in which Banana Fibres are now being used for making garments, ropes, mats, carpets, cushions, cushion covers, bags, baskets and table clothes, etc. He stressed that more than Rs. 10,000 Crores worth of business could be generated with the Banana Fibre and allied products.
Smt. Anita Roy, Entrepreneur emphasized that the gained knowledge and technology could be used for creating a sustainable comprehensive business ecosystem that will enhance the livelihood of the Banana growers through the value-addition to Banana byproducts.
The Senior Officials and Staff Members of the Institute were also present during the occasion.
