To support the Aquaculture activities’ development and expansion in the high-altitude Cold Arid Regions of Ladakh, the ICAR-Directorate of Coldwater Fisheries Research, Bhimtal, Nainital, Uttarakhand has established the Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) based Rainbow Trout Hatchery at Chuchot Village, Leh, Ladakh for producing the healthy stock-size fish for the first time under the controlled environmental conditions.
With a production capacity of 50,000 advanced fry, the Hatchery operation in the RAS Unit commenced in January, 2022 with eyed-ova consignment from the ICAR-DCFR Experimental Fish Farm, Champawat, Uttarakhand.
Due to the provision of the controlled incubation conditions in the RAS Hatchery, the hatching of eyed-ova has started earlier than the conventional flow-through systems that operate under the fluctuating harsh-winter temperatures.
Dr. Pramod Kumar Pandey, Director, ICAR-DCFR, Bhimtal emphasized that the RAS based Hatchery Model will effectively help in overcoming the inherent climatic challenges, enable the timely production and availability of Rainbow Trout Seed and promote self-reliance in the Rainbow Trout Culture in Ladakh. He underlined the Institute’s plan to establish more Units in the different parts of Ladakh for facilitating an exponential growth in the Aquaculture production.
Dr. Pandey also highlighted the field implementation and demonstration of the Advanced Hatchery Technology that is being carried out by the scientists at the Chuchot Village under the Tribal Sub Plan Scheme.
