DARE/ICAR Meeting with CGIAR Institutions

31st January 2017, New Delhi.

A two-day joint Meeting of DARE/ICAR with the Institutions/Centres of the CGIAR Consortium of International Agricultural Research Centres was held on 30-31 January, 2017 at NASC Complex, New Delhi. This was in continuation of the meeting held on 27 December, 2016. In these meetings, review of the on-going joint activities of DARE/ICAR and CG Centres in India, DARE/ICAR- CG Centres’ Work Plans and Annual Plans- 2017 were thoroughly discussed and action points identified. Dr Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary, DARE and Director General, ICAR inaugurated the meeting.

Director General, ICRISAT, and senior officers of ICRISAT, CIMMYT, IRRI, ICARDA, IWMI, Biodiversity International, CIP, IFPRI, ILRI and ICRAF and senior officers of ICAR Headquarters and Directors or their representatives of the concerned ICAR Institutes participated in the discussion.

Dr Mohapatra also expressed that ICAR and CG Centres are working for the farmers of the country and emphasized on developing novel technologies and taking them to farmers. India has been a collaborator, supporter and benefactor of CG Centres through different activities like germplasm and technology exchange, capacity building etc; their experience of working elsewhere in different environments will help India and therefore, a stronger relationship is needed for activities largely focussed on Indian agriculture.  Besides identifying the priority projects/action points, guidelines for precise formulation of the Work/Action Plan in partnership mode of respective ICAR-CG Centres were firmed up.

For the first time, on 31 January, 2017, an extended discussion followed on some common issues pertaining to Indian agriculture, like rainfed/dryland agriculture and water management, wasteland development, utilization of rice fallows, developing roadmap for taking new technologies to farmers and joint research and education efforts for the development of African countries. The CG Centres supported the ICAR efforts and expressed their readiness to share the responsibility with ICAR for developing action plan to address the challenging problems expeditiously.
