The ICAR-Central Institute of Agricultural Engineering, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh organized a Webshop on “Impact of COVID-19 on Agricultural Machinery Manufacturing Sector in India: Present challenges and future strategies” today.
Accentuating on the new norms experienced during the last few months due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Dr. K. Alagusundaram, Deputy Director General (Agricultural Engineering), ICAR stressed on the need for the agricultural implement manufacturing industries to produce good quality machines, drones, residue management equipments, etc. The DDG also emphasized on addressing the region specific problems jointly by ICAR, State Agricultural Universities, Central and State Governments, respectively.
Dr. Kanchan K. Singh, ADG (FE), ICAR stressed on the need for converting the challenges due to COVID-19 situation into opportunities. He urged for taking-up the skill development programmes at a faster pace to generate employment for migratory labor. He also emphasized on preparing a detailed region specific plan for all round mechanization of the country.
Dr. S.N. Jha, ADG (PE), ICAR emphasized on reorienting the future research works towards automations in agricultural operations using Robotics, Internet of Things, Sensor Networks, etc., to mitigate the challenges due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Dr. C.R. Mehta, Director, ICAR-CIAE, Bhopal highlighted the challenges being faced by the tractor, power tillers and farm machinery manufacturing sector due to migration of labour and availability of raw material during the COVID-19 period.
Shri T.R. Kesavan, President, Tractor and Mechanization Association discussed the “Impact of COVID-19 on Tractor and Farm Machinery Industry” and Shri S.V. Raju, Chairman, Agricultural Machinery Manufacturers Association (AMMA-India) highlighted the “Impact of COVID-19 on Farm Machinery Manufacturing Industry in India”.
A total of 18 invited speakers (17 from National and State Farm Manufacturers Associations and 1 from Department of Scientific and Industrial Research) expressed their views through presentations in the workshop.
The Webshop was aimed at discussing the present challenges being faced by the tractors and farm machinery manufacturing sector of the country due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and formulating the strategies to sustain the mechanization goals of the country.
The senior officials of ICAR Institutes along with more than 500 participants consisting of tractor and farm machinery manufacturers from different states, scientists from DSIR participated in the Webshop.
