Dignitaries Appreciate Fishing Technologies

Shri Tariq Anwar addressing the scientists and staff of the centresShri Tariq Anwar, Minister of State for Agriculture & Food Processing, Govt. of India visited Regional Centres of Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT) and Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Visakhapatnam on 11th May 2013. Shri Anwar was accompanied by Shri T. Subba Rami Reddy, Member of Rajya Sabha. Shri Anwar showed keen interest in the technologies developed at these Regional Centres and also expressed satisfaction over the outcome in the form of usefulness of the technologies to the fishers. 

Shri Anwar praised scientists of CMFRI for development of cage culture and successful captive breeding of Grouper fish for the first time in the country and also lauded the scientists of CIFT Visakhapatnam Research Centre for the development of different fishing gears catering the needs of fisheries sector viz., different multi-seam gill nets, foldable fish traps, design of Turtle Excluding Devices, Juvenile and by catch fish reduction devices and mapping of aquatic resources using GPS. Shri Reddy commended the scientists for the technologies developed at these two Regional Centres and their usefulness to the fishers, especially of Andhra Pradesh region.

The visit to the laboratories was followed by meeting with scientists and staff of both institutes, formers scientists of the institutes, officials from state departments of Government of Andhra Pradesh and representatives from fishermen community and industry. Dr. G. Maheswarudu, SIC, VRC of CMFRI delivered welcome address and presented the research activities of the centre. Dr. M. M. Prasad, SIC, CIFT Visakhapatnam Research Centre briefed the visiting dignitaries about the research activities of CIFT.
