Workshop on “Mission towards Zero Non-Descript AnGR of India” organized

The ICAR-National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources, Karnal, Haryana organized a National Workshop on “Mission towards Zero Non-Descript AnGR of India” today.

The Chief Guest, Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR) emphasized on the significance of characterization and registration of the non-descript population of the country. The Director General urged for giving emphasis on conservation and improvement of a new population along with its registration.

Dr. Mohapatra stated that the Gazette Notification of all the Registered Breeds is considered to be a major reform and revolutionary step towards preserving the sovereignty right for the country’s AnGR. The DG urged the policy makers, officials and stakeholders for joining hands in the mega task along with utilizing the digital platforms and involving the general masses to complete the mission towards Zero Non-Descript AnGR of India in a time bound manner.

Dr. Bhupendra Nath Tripathi, Deputy Director General (Animal Science), ICAR complemented the Institute for achieving the milestone of notifying 200 breeds of native livestock and poultry including dog breeds. The need of describing all the native population in effective collaboration with the various stakeholders was stressed in the DDG’s address.

Dr. Praveen Malik, Animal Husbandry Commissioner, Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (AH&D), Government of India outlined the overview on the changing dynamics of livestock species, specifically, population decline in some of the minor species. Dr. Malik also underlined the existence of large mixed population in the country that needed to be looked into.

Earlier, in his welcome address, Dr. B.P. Mishra, Director, ICAR-NBAGR, Karnal highlighted the importance of holding such a Workshop of National importance. He also discussed the aspects related to the current status on registration of different breeds, state-wise proportions of non-descript populations and the way forward for the Mission towards Zero Non-Descript.

The Workshop registered a total participation by 215 Stakeholders from across the country.
