Farmers’ Training on Summer Sorghum Organized in Tamil Nadu

A farmers’ awareness-cum-training programme was organized under tribal sub plan (TSP) on 14th March, 2014 at RVS-KVK, Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu by Directorate of Sorghum Research (DSR), Hyderabad.

In his key note address Dr. J.V. Patil, Director, DSR, Hyderabad highlighted the potential of sorghum production technologies and scope of value addition.

Dr. R. Shankarpandian, Officer in-charge focused on the availability of suitable sorghum technologies and its scope for further development.

Earlier Dr. D. Jawahar, Officer in-charge, Agricultural Research Station, Tamilnadu Agriculture University (TNAU), Kovilpatti welcomed the dignitaries and participants.

During interaction with scientists, farmers expressed constraints in sorghum cultivation mainly due to non-availability of seeds of the improved cultivars in the local markets and improved practices. Some sorghum food products were displayed through exhibition. Relevant literature on sorghum in local language was also distributed among the farmers.

Shri K. Sounderarajan, Additional Director of Agriculture; Shri Thiru P. Rex, Deputy Director of Agriculture; Shri K. Krishna Kumar, Agriculture Officer; and Smt. P. Anandhi, AICSIP, Kovilpatti were present on the occasion.

Over 200 farmers from Tirunelveli, Madurai and Virudhunagar districts including DSR scientists and officials from the state agriculture departments participated in the programme.
