The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore, Kolkata organized the Awareness Programme on “Hilsa and Dolphin Conservation in River Ganga” at Farakka, West Bengal today.
Shri R. Azhagesan, General Manager, Farakka Barrage Authority, West Bengal advised the fishermen not to use small size mesh net for Hilsa catching. The legal issues involved in destructive fishing like poisoning were also emphasized in Shri Azhagesan’s address.
Shri Vineet Pande, Assistant Director, Inland Waterways Authority of India, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Government of India expressed his concern on the decreasing Hilsa population and pollution of the River Ganga.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore highlighted the recent activities on Hilsa Improvement Programme in the River Ganga at Farakka carried out by the Institute. The new initiatives for Dolphin Conservation were also underlined by Dr. Das. Outlining the Prime Minister’s Flagship Programme on “Project Dolphin in River Ganga”, Dr. Das urged the fishermen communities to stop killing the Dolphins and Juvenile Hilsa which is the major cause of declining in the Downstream of the Farakka Barrage.
The programme organized under the National Mission for Clean Ganga Programme was aimed at educating the fishermen towards Hilsa and Dolphin Conservation in the River Ganga particularly, at the Farakka and Cleaning of the River Ganga.
Around 216 Fishermen from the Upstream and Downstream Farakka Barrage and Feeder Canal directly involved in fisheries activities in the River Ganga participated in the programme.
