ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Lembucherra , Tripura Centre has released 16 improved varieties of different crops on the 15th September .2014. These varieties have been approved for release by the State Varietal release Committee under the Chairmanship of Principal Secretary of Agriculture, Govt. of Tripura, Dr V. K. Bahuguna. Dr M. Datta (Joint Director, ICAR, Tripura Centre) welcomed the Chairman and members of SVRC, Govt. of Tripura. Including Dr D. P. Sarkar (Director, Agriculture), Shri S. Das, (Director, Horticulture) and other senior Officers of state government. Scientists of Tripura Centre were also present in the meeting. Dr S.V. Ngachan (Director, ICAR Research Complex, Umiam) gave an appraisal on the superior traits of the varieties and their potential for increasing the production and productivity of different Crops in the state and the region as a whole. Dr S. P. Das (Sr Scientist, Plant Breeding) presented a detailed report about the new varieties that include 9 varieties of rice suitable for different ecosystems ( named as Tripura khara 1, Tripura Khara 2, Tripura Jala, Tripura Chikan Dhan, Tripura Sarath, Tripura Nirogi, Tripura Hakuchu 1, Tripura Hakuchu 2, Tripura Aus); 3 vaieties of pulses i.e. one green gram (Tripura Moong) and one Black gram (Tripura Mashkolai), one sesamum variety Tripura Seeping), one pineapple (Tripura Anarash 3), one elephant foot yam (Tripura Yam Batema), one greater yam (Tripura Yan Tha) and one papaya (Tripura Papita) .
