The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore, Kolkata in association with the Food and Agriculture Organization organized the Virtual Workshop on “Inland Fisheries in India and the creation of capacity in the collection and analysis of Inland Fisheries Statistics” today.

Dr. V.V. Sugunan, Senior Expert, FAO-ICAR-CIFRI Project stressed on the need of documentation on the Inland Fisheries Resources, their productivity and utilization in India. He also emphasized that this time a major attempt has been made to put a comprehensive document on the Inland Fisheries in India.
Earlier, welcoming the dignitaries, Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore briefed about the main objective of the Workshop to discuss about the Inland Fisheries Documentation Strategies and provide the critical review and expert opinion on the First Draft Report.
Dr. John Valbo-Jorgensen, Fisheries Resource Officer (Inland Fisheries), FAO stated that in India, the Inland Fisheries are under pressure due to access to these resources. He said that the management of Inland Fisheries Resources is also difficult in comparison to aquaculture and culture-based management.
Dr. Ferge-Smith Simon, Representative, FAO emphasized that the document shall include the details of whole river statistics and not sector-wise.
Dr. M.V. Gupta, World food Laurette stressed on the need of separating the data of catch of aquaculture and captured fisheries in inland sector by the State Fisheries Department.
More than 70 participants including representatives from the FAO; Department of Fisheries, Government of India and Fisheries Departments of States and Union Territories, Experts, Technocrats, Scientists and Academia participated in the Workshop.
