With the aim to teach the farmers how to harness the benefit of lac as well as fruits of various ber (Ziziphus mauritiana Lamk.) varieties, the ICAR-Indian Institute of Natural Resins and Gum, Ranchi organized a field day to educate the farmers new technology developed by the Institute, at Putadag village of Angara, District Ranchi. The scientists of IINRG briefed the farmers on advantages of lac cultivation on fruit ber varieties over exiting wild ber varieties, kusmi lac cultivation on Swadipalash (Butea monosperma) and protection of lac crop form various enemy insects. How to grow lac in harmony with nature and role of lac insect/host plant biodiversity conservation were also explained.
Twenty-five plants of identified fruit ber varieties were distributed and planted in the farmers’ field.
About 30 farmers participated in the programme.
