A delegation from India comprising officials from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Ministry of Commerce, Export Inspection Council, and FSSAI attended the 26th Session of Codex Committee on Food Import and Export Inspection and Certification Systems (CCFICS) from 1st May 2023 to 5th May 2023 at Hobart, Tasmania at the invitation of the Government of Australia.
CCFICS is one of the committees under the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) tasked with developing CAC standards and guidelines on export and import product inspection and certification systems. The agenda of the meeting included discussions on draft guidelines on recognition and maintenance of equivalence of National Food Control Systems; draft consolidated guidelines related to equivalence; guidelines on the prevention and control of food fraud; draft principal and guidelines on the use of Remote Audit and Verification in Regulatory frameworks and review and update of the principal for Traceability/Product Tracing as a Tool within a Food Inspection and Certification systems.
Under the emerging global issues and potential new works, India introduced CRD4 on the development of guidance on appeals mechanisms in the context of rejection of imported food. The proposal received support, and it was recognised that the subject was within the scope of the CCFICS, and there was value in progressing the work. CCFICS26 requested that India assisted by Nigeria prepare a new discussion considering the comments made at the session and encouraged other Members to come forward to assist.
India exports substantial amounts of agricultural produce and food commodities and it is important for the country to actively participate in the Codex activities to regulate the production, processing, and trade of food commodities to safeguard human health and promote fair practices in food trade.
