13th March 2025, New Delhi
His Excellency Mr Justin Tokely, President, National Assembly of the Republic of Madagascar, along with Members of Parliament, visited the ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-IARI) New Delhi. The visit focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in the fields of agriculture and food security.
During the visit, Dr Ch. Srinivasa Rao, Director, ICAR-IARI, highlighted the institute’s significant contributions to global agricultural advancements. He emphasized the cutting-edge research being conducted at ICAR-IARI in areas such as crop science, horticulture, soil health, farm mechanization, and biotechnology. Dr Rao also shared the institute's achievements in developing high-yielding, climate-resilient varieties of major crops, including rice, wheat, oilseeds, and legumes.
His Excellency Mr Tokely remarked on Madagascar’s vast arable land, covering 36 million hectares, but noted that only 10% of this land is currently cultivated due to a lack of technical know-how. He emphasized the importance of international collaboration, particularly in the areas of renewable energy and food security, to help address these challenges.
Discussions were held regarding the possibility of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between ICAR-IARI and the Government of Madagascar. The proposed MoU aims to facilitate a collaborative exchange program focusing on agricultural teaching, technology transfer, and research.
As part of the visit, the delegates toured the Nanaji Deshmukh Plant Phenomics Center and the Integrated Farming System (IFS) model at ICAR-IARI. They were briefed on the latest research tools and techniques being used by the institute for advancing agricultural research and development.
The visit marked an important step toward fostering stronger ties and cooperation between India and Madagascar in the agricultural sector.
