Ranching & Tagging in River Ganga: An Initiative for Wild Fish Germplasm Restoration

The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore, Kolkata organized the Fish Ranching and Tagging Programme to mark the celebrations of Republic Day - 2021 at Daspara Ghat Barrackpore, Kolkata, West Bengal under Namami Gange Programme today.

Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore, Kolkata & Principal Investigator, ICAR-CIFRI-NMCG highlighted the present Project activities and the need of ranching in river Ganga.

Shri D.K. Mahajan, Executive Engineer and Shri Joy Krishna Praharaj, Assistant Engineer, Indira Gandhi Water Treatment Plant (IGWTP), Barrackpore, Kolkata graced the event as the Guests of Honor.

Around 35,000 Advanced Fingerlings of Rohu, Catla, Mrigal Calbasu were released in the river Ganga. Besides ranching, about 100 fishes were tagged (External floy tag) to know the migration pathway for taking the management measures to conserve the natural fish genetic resources. A mass Dolphin Awareness Programme was also organized during the programme for conserving the National Aquatic Animal of the country.
